Publisher Plus gives graphic designers another tool for desktop publishing.

One of the things I really enjoy about being a graphic designer and a part of the marketing profession is completing creative layouts. Whether it be a newsletter, email, postcard or business card, I love creating layouts to showcase a product, service or organization. Typically, I start pieces from scratch through Adobe InDesign or even Photoshop depending on the project, but sometimes, I will turn to programs like Publisher Plus from Pearl Mountain Software.

Publisher Plus also has a wide variety of editing features including Auto Snap, which is not something I’ve seen in other desktop publishing programs. Auto Snap gives the user the ability to ‘snap’ between objects and even between objects and the page margins. You can also easily manipulate photos and images to fit frames easily.
After testing the app, I discovered just how easy it is to use. When you start the program up, you are given the option to use one of the pre-existing templates or to create a new, blank page. I decided to first work with one of the templates to see how complicated it might be to modify it. I was pleasantly surprised first at how many choices there were for templates. I chose one for a spa brochure. Another aspect I was surprised about was how detailed the template was. For example, the spa brochure didn’t just have Lorem Ipsum, a.k.a. random text, inserted in the brochure. The template has some real-world examples of what the text could be for a health spa. This is somewhat unique for a publishing program as it is normally randomly generated text.
Another feature that is really nice about Publisher Plus is the drag and drop feature for images. The templates have pre-defined masks for the images in place. If you want to replace the ‘placeholder’ images, all you need to do is drag your new image into the mask space. The program will automatically place it where the old image was. This is a wonderful feature for customization of the Publisher Plus templates.
After I tested out the templates, I formed a quick flyer from a blank document. Within about five minutes, I had a background, an image with mask, a calendar and some shapes with drop shadows placed on the page. I don’t typically have the philosophy of ‘quicker is better,’ but with Publisher Plus, you can have speed and quality.
Pulisher Plus retails for $19.99 and is currently on version 1.0 (released May 1, 2014). For the price, quality of product and ease of use, I can recommend this program to any designer looking for a boost to their tool kit. Will I give up the precision of Adobe InDesign, no. But, I will use an app like Publisher Plus to add to my bucket of graphic design tricks so that my clients have the best product possible.
